Inspired by his active involvement in service opportunities, Long Island high school senior James Griffin has recently completed an ambitious Independent Service Project (ISP) for the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation (HLF) entitled “Make a Difference with Every Step You Take”. As a Young Ambassador for HLF, James has participated in a variety of community initiatives, including events with NY Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and the Food Bank For New York City. After reflecting on the mission of another HLF Community Partner, The Garden of Dreams Foundation, James embarked upon a campaign to raise funds to support the organization’s goal to “help bring life changing opportunities to young people in need”. It’s amazing to think they have made a difference in the lives of 400,000 children and their families and I was inspired to help contribute through my Independent Service Project,” stated James Griffin.

After participating in clothing drives and learning that socks are the one of the most sought-after items by men, women and children, James partnered with “We Help Two” for his ISP to produce socks to sell as a fundraiser for the Garden of Dreams. “The interesting thing about the organization I found that helps with the manufacturing is that in addition to raising funds through my sales, they have a sock donation program so for every pack of socks I sell, I can have an additional one to donate to a local community organization of my choice.”

James found creative inspiration in the blue and white star that guides The Garden of Dreams Foundation and designed various styles. With the help and support of his community, James was able to sell the socks at local fairs as well as share the overall mission of HLF and its Community Partner with all those he met. Through this project, James was able to raise significant funds and donated 100% of sales to The Garden of Dreams. In addition, James was able to provide socks to those in need in the local community by donating men’s women’s and children’s socks to The INN, a not-for-profit volunteer organization in Hempstead, New York that “unites the community to overcome the challenge of hunger and homelessness on Long Island.”

After reflecting upon his service opportunities as a Young Ambassador and with inspiration from Henrik Lundqvist, James plans to pursue a career in broadcasting, while seeking opportunities to continue his advocacy for underserved populations in his college community and beyond.
