Back to School virtual drive for our community partner, Together for Better
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected thousands of schools and millions of children across the world, including those supported by HLF’s community partner Together for Better. Now, Together for Better and HLF are partnering on a Back to School drive in the Dominican Republic. Their goal is to help a local pre- and primary school equip children to succeed by donating books and educational resources to create a much-needed library.
This is Together for Better
Together for Better (TFB) is a Swedish Foundation which strives to create positive change in the lives of children through education, by supporting schools in some of the most marginalized areas of the Dominican Republic. The TFB supported schools are run by local women, teachers, and on-the-ground foundations. TFB builds schools, classrooms, bathrooms and playgrounds, mini-libraries, and supplies educational materials, and school uniforms for pre- and public school-aged children.
FUCPE
FUCPE is a pre- and primary school in Villa Hermosa in the province of La Romana, Dominican Republic. Villa Hermosa is one of the poorest sections of La Romana, plagued by high crime rates in dangerous neighborhoods. It is run by Ms. Elvitana Roberto, the founder of the Dominican-registered Foundation FUCPE, which owns the land and the school facilities.
The school started out with 14 children receiving education in a small building made of plywood. Today, the school educates around 200 local children. The school wants to create a mini-library containing textbooks and reference materials on mathematics, geography, history, and other foundational subjects. This library will supplement learning for all students at the FUCPE School, helping the Foundation FUCPE support child education for years to come.
