In 2024, the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation (HLF) provided a $17,600 grant to build new sanitary facilities at FUCPE, a primary school serving 240 children in the outskirts of La Romana, Dominican Republic. The majority of students are Haitian or of Haitian descent, and the school community has long needed safe, reliable restrooms to support student health, dignity, and learning.

What we built

  • Girls’ facilities: three restrooms with three sinks
  • Boys’ facilities: two restrooms, two urinals, and two sinks
  • Staff facilities: one restroom with a sink for teachers and administrators

The new building sits in the corner of the playground that HLF previously funded, creating a safer and more complete school environment for daily learning and play.

Impact

  • Direct beneficiaries: 240 students ages 3–13, plus approximately 10 teachers and staff every year
  • Health and hygiene education: The school has a student program on handwashing, clean water, and caring for shared facilities to reduce illness and support attendance

Gratitude

This project was completed in partnership with Together for Better and local school leadership. We are grateful to everyone who helped bring these facilities to life and to the FUCPE community for their dedication to student well-being.
