In spring of 2022 HLF decided to support a sustainability project with Together For Better at their affiliated school FUCPE in Villa Hermosa situated in La Romana, Dominican Republic. HLF has previously supported Together for Better in the funding of a playground and a mini library at the same school. HLF is this year funding a hurricane proofing project which contains building a new roof above the three classrooms plus the office. Together For Better and FUCPE’s goal is to complete the project over the summer holiday in 2022.
FUCPE School was started by Elvitana Roberto in 2008, in a small one-room house across the street from where the school is currently situated. Having great experience from working within the education system, Elvitana early funded a Foundation (Fundación Crecimiento Comunitario, Proyectando Esperanza), and took up a personal loan to buy land for her school. Little by little it grew and today she helps around 250 kids, all from marginalized families, to get education. In 2021-2022 school year FUCPE serves 258 students, all from marginalized families.
