This past spring HLFYA Alumni and 2019 program Mentor Julia Huth completed a book drive for the fourth consecutive year. The books went to Speedway Academy located in Newark, New Jersey. At Speedway Academy there are inadequate resources to supply the school with books for leisure. In other words children don’t have access to read books for fun in class and at home. Through this book drive the teachers can stock their classroom libraries with books the students can take home.
Over the course of about a month, Julia got about 1700 books which beat her personal goal of 1500 books. “Every year the number of books I’ve collected has increased and this year I set my goals high with the hopes I could collect 1,500 books since last year I was fortunate enough to receive 1,000 donations.” Since the first year of the drive Julia has collected about 3,500 books.
“What inspired me to run this drive is I have always loved to read and to see kids who really can’t do something that I love so much made me want to do something about it. It is always very rewarding to bring the books to the school and help kids find the ones they wanted to read. It was amazing to have exceeded my goal of 1,500 books by collecting a total of almost 1,700 books. I can’t wait to continue and hopefully expand my drive next year!”
